Professor Richard Bohmer

Richard Bohmer is a physician and management academic.  Having trained in New Zealand he practiced primary and hospital medicine in New Zealand, England and Africa.  In 1989 he helped open a surgical hospital in Sudan.  He completed an MPH in Health Care Management at the Harvard School of Public Health in 1993 on a Fulbright scholarship and became the Director of Clinical Quality Improvement at the Massachusetts General Hospital.  He was on the faculty of Harvard Business School from 1997 to 2015 where he developed MBA and executive programs in health care management and was a co-developer of the joint Harvard Business School/Harvard Medical School MD-MBA.

His research focuses on intersection between medical care and management practice and concentrates on understanding how to best manage health care delivery organizations. He has published in both management and medical literatures on learning, technology adoption and operations strategy in health care and on quality improvement and patient safety. He is also the author of Designing Care: Aligning the Nature and Management of Health Care.  He is currently an International Visiting Fellow at the King's Fund in London and consults and teaches internationally.
